Path of Pearls, Bahrain 2012

Manama, capital of Bahrain, was chosen this year’s “Capital of Arab Culture”.
Pearling and its cultural landscapes in Bahrain are on the tentative list of UNESCO’s World Heritage. Unique for Bahrain, and lacking any comparative example, is the exclusiveness of economic and socio-cultural dependence of a society on the revenues of one single natural resource and sea-use tradition: pearling.
After the end of the pearling era, the socio-cultural system was heavily affected, and the special and architectural elements slowly became obsolete in the face of new developments. Using the Pearling Testimony the nation gets an opportunity to draw the attention of the international community to the country’s great cultural potential.

Painting with Light was asked to participate in the organization of this cultural celebration. It was a huge task to design both set and lighting on an enormous stage, which seemed to be floating on the water.
