SKY The Musical tells the story of the sixteen-year-old Sky, who undergoes the complex problems of a teenager: divorced parents, a first love, being bullied at school, ... To escape, she creates a dream world. Here, she gets the chance to take care of the dilemmas of her daily life.

The unique musical by Robin de Levita, John Ewbank and Marco Borsato was a must-see experience at the Theater Amsterdam. Remarkably, theatre producer Imagine Nation brings the 3D-technology that we know from cinema to theatre. John Ewbank wrote some compelling scores for this brand new musical.

For the new production, they asked Painting with Light to think up a lighting design. Both the story and the techniques that were used distinguish the production from other musicals. 

Solution

Sky dreams, and when you dream, you distort reality. In this case, it is distorted by computer generated images, side by side with the real actors on stage. The scenery was replaced with 3D projections and depth images.

Robin de Levita and Kees Abrahams worked on this musical as producers. John Ewbank is the coproducer and, together with Marco Borsato, he is in charge of music and lyrics. Luc Peumans was the lighting designer who made this musical shine.

In musicals with this kind of virtual scenery techniques, a sophisticated lighting design is necessary to merge the physical and the virtual worlds and to make the result believable. Painting with Light als delivered the mediaserver show control technology to display the complex 3D videocontent.
